Regulations and Compliance for ESD Wrist Straps

An ESD wrist band must be worn with 360° of contact on the employee's skin and plugged into the wrist strap receptacle that is located at every ESD protected work station. Employees working at standup operations (equipped with an ESD floor mat) must wear ESD footwear or foot, heel, and sole grounders qualified by the ESD coordinator per the requirements in ANSI/ESD STM 9.1 and ANSI/ESD STM 97.1.

Grounding of Conductors
According to ANSI/ESD S20.20, "all conductors in the environment, including personnel, shall be bonded or electrically connected and attached to a known ground or contrived ground (as on shipboard or on aircraft)." Doing so maintains an equipotential balance between all connected personnel and objects. If all items in the system can be kept at the same potential, electrostatic protection can be preserved above a "zero voltage ground".
